The Druid City Garden Project is a community-based non-profit organization in Tuscaloosa, AL working to increase access to fresh, locally grown produce and educate the community about sustainability and healthy eating.
Our pilot program at University Place Schools began in May 2010, when a field of clover beside the school was transformed into a 2500 square foot organic garden.
Since then, the garden has blossomed into an exciting new teaching space and is also a site of food production for our community. We are committed to creating a sustainable system in our garden, and use crop rotation, companion planting and organic soil amendments and controls in order to manage pests and disease and grow healthy, nutritious plants.
Our program engages at-risk youth in science, nutrition, and healthy eating through garden-based learning. Students help plant, weed, and harvest crops, and have the opportunity to eat what they have helped to grow. During the school year, we operate an on-site farm stand, so that parents, teachers, and school staff can purchase produce grown in the garden.
The garden also serves as a resource for University of Alabama students interested in organic farming, educational outreach, and community building, and is a site of multi-level community interaction. We envision this space as one that will bring many different people together.

Bio:
The farmers’ desire to farm stems from a deep respect for the land, knowledge of the degradation industrial agriculture has on the land, an engrained entrepreneurial spirit, and a love of good food. The farmers’ initiative and the extended family’s support have resulted in the removal of tons of petrochemical fertilizers and pesticides from the watershed, the restoration of wetlands, and the plant and animal species native to West Central Alabama having a place to express themselves to their fullest extent.
Through much hard work and intense determination the two’s garden has grown from less than three-fourths of an acre in 2004 to five or six acres in 2007 on which 50 different vegetables encompassing nearly 250 varieties and numerous cut flowers are grown. With 150 acres now available for organic production, the farmers plan to diversify their operation to include livestock, a perennial fruit orchard, and an heirloom seed saving garden to preserve genetic diversity and select for local adaptability. Future plans also include biodiversity and wildlife habitat enhancements such as bird and bat houses and mixed species hedgerows to provide a year round nectar supply for native bees and beneficial insects.
